Succulent suppliers
« on: June 21, 2012, 10:26:10 AM »
I have members locally looking for specialist succulent nurseries - preferably within Europe I am guessing. Any recommendations from anyone out there ?

One member is busy replicating Guilfoyle's Volcano in her garden so you can see the need !

all the best, Rosie

Rosie, I haven't yet had enough news of succulent suppliers to add any specialists to the suppliers list, but African Succulents is a Spanish specialist that may be close enough for your members to think about.
I hope other people can recommend some other succulent specialists!

Hello Alisdair,

I will pass this on, thanks very much for the link. If anyone has other recommendations, it would be great to hear about them.

A Greek nursery for cactus and succulents that I mentioned elsewhere on the Forum is
Poulimenos
Kapandriti 19014
Attikis
Tel 22950 52200
Fax 22950 53000
http://www.poulimenos.gr/english/
Email: info@poulimenos.gr
His web site isn’t great but you can ring (he speaks English) and ask about particular plants and ways of purchasing.

MGS member, Greece. I garden in Attica, Greece and Mt Goulinas (450m) Central Greece

Fleur, That reminds me that we have absolutely no nurseries in Greece in the suppliers list. It is mainly for nurseries that will export. Do you think I should add Poulimenos? And what about any other Greek nurseries? It would be great to do our bit in adding to Greece's export income ;)

Corma in Spain sell succulents and cacti.  Their homepage is http://www.corma.es/Page.aspx?page=1&section=617, unfortunately only in French, Catalan and Spainish.

I have gardened in sub-tropical Florida, maritime UK, continental Europe and the Mediterranean basin, France. Of the 4 I have found that the most difficult climate for gardening is the latter.

David, Corma's website says that they sell only to the trade, not to private individuals. How strict are they about that?

Good question. I would suggest that anyone interested in buying from Corma ask if they, as MGS members, could buy from them or ask for a list of their distributors.  Corma`s website lists succulents and a range of other plants that they sell.

I found Corma plants at our local garden centre.

A good source for seeds of succulents is www.koehres-kaktus.de from Germany. In Spain one of the best succulent nurseries is www.cactuserrano.es: you can visit in Almeria or buy plants on-line.

Thanks so much for all this very useful info. I will let you know how we get on and whether we can persuade any of these to sell plants to us here.

I went to Poulimenos in the Autumn.  There are a great many specimen sized cactus, agaves and some succulents.  I think they also grow small cactus and succulents of the type you would be from a flower shop rather than a nursery so I guess these are aimed at a different market.  The owner was not there on the day I turned up but I was allowed to wander round.  If you are a serious buyer it might be best to call in advance.  The nursery is not too difficult to find and there is some signposting and a map and directions on the website.

I also found the website of what looks like a really interesting nursery for succulents and cactus in Italy, though I have not been there or had any dealings with them.  http://www.cactusmania.it/en/home.php

The Greek branch has a list of nurseries in Greece and I have recently discovered and can recommend a couple of additions.  I will do so under the correct topic.

You could try the following in Italy. I can't say whether they will export or not. A lot of nursery owners speak of Italian couriers not being insured once the plants leave Italy and so they are unwilling to transport the plants.

I got the information below from the list of vendors at the local flower shows http://www.floracult.com/home.aspx and http://www.laconservadellaneve.it/home.htm. For anybody in Rome in spring, Floracult already has information about its show in April this year. Not so "La Conserva della Neve" but check for updated information every so often.

I can't say which of the following will be able to speak to you in Spanish or English. Give them a try anyway :)

I have a small garden in Rome, Italy. Some open soil, some concrete, some paved. Temperatures in winter occasionally down to 0°C. Summer temperatures up to 40°C in the shade. There are never watering restrictions but, of course, there is little natural water for much of June, July and August.
