What about Vibernum tinus , a veritable weed.........almost, Laurus nobilis...relatively slow growing but will reach heights of several metres, Euonymus species .if clipped, Quercus ilex.........the evergreen oak makes a very good screen with a bit of clipping.

I have gardened in sub-tropical Florida, maritime UK, continental Europe and the Mediterranean basin, France. Of the 4 I have found that the most difficult climate for gardening is the latter.

I found that a good shrub for screening is Photinia X fraseri:  Some of the young growths can be very attractive reds and oranges.
