Spring has arrived (in the UK)!

Yes, today I arrived at work which is to the south of London to find Crocus sieberi and Crocus tommasinianus in flower. Also many other plants starting. Hamamelis, Forsythia etc. Some snowdrops have been out for a while indeed some Galanthus elwesii are over now but more out though straight G. nivalis hasn't started yet.

In our Sussex garden the main sign of spring is a young plant of Camellia transnokoensis, its fragrant flowers out since just before Christmas; and now Camellia cuspidata x saluenensis Cornish Snow is starting to flower too, and some plants of Helleborus tibetanus are showing fat pink buds. But all this is thoroughly un-mediterranean!

Yesterday I noticed that Leucojum aestivum has started. Everything in for a shock tonight as frosts are predicted. It has been so mild.

At last we are having proper frosts which will be quite a shock to many plants which are in growth now. Only 2 days ago our Prunus subhirtella autumnalis was not only covered in flowers but bumble bees and parakeets.
