SERRES ACROPOLIS
Serres boasts a tree covered Acropolis topped by the remains of an old tower named the ‘Tower of Orestes’ or ‘Koulas’
A Capparis spinosa growing on the old walls
There is a coffee shop on top of the Acropolis with views over Serres
Ornamental bird boxes on one of the trees and Commelina erecta ,surprisingly, in one of the planters making a change from the usual geraniums

SERRES ACROPOLIS, THE CHURCH OF SAINT NICHOLAS
The church of Saint Nicholas is a little lower down from the Acropolis and surrounded by tall pine trees.
Reading about the church on several sources I learned that it dates from the first half of the14th century
It was fully restored in 1937 and that its rich decorations and murals are now in the Ecclesiastical Museum of Serres
The carved stone in the dry grass is not mentioned at all

BEZESTENI, SERRES
This Ottoman-era building dates from the 15th century. The Bezesteni, the fabric market, is now the Archaeological Museum housing finds from the area.

I had passed through Serres on a bus tour in September 1966 and took this photo of what looks like a newly made Town Square with the Bezesteni at the far end. From the photo you can see many tall Poplar trees while now the square is dominated by Plane trees.

A street market was taking place in 1966 and this man, selling brightly coloured flokati rugs and a huge kilim, had set up his stall on the road, now pedestrianized next to the Bezesteni

As a foot note let me say that in the Archaeological Museum, given pride of place, is a beautiful 12th Century mosaic depicting Saint Andrew the Apostle from the Old Cathedral

Here is a sample of some of the plants available, Tradescantia, Canna lilies, Coleus and African daisies

THE HOLY MONASTERY OF IOANNIS PRODROMOS, SERRES
Μονή Τιμίου Προδρόμου , Σερρών

We had been told that we must visit this Monastery, 12 Kilometers from Serres. However, when we passed through the door, we realized that we should not attempt to go down to the church. The path was very steep and had a slippery look about it. Was there another entrance? Why was there no handrail?

We enjoyed the view and noted the flower filled pots dotted here and there.
