This plant grew next to a dwarf Aspilia I bought to put in one of my summer pots. Now it is bigger and with tiny flowers it seems like what I would regard as a 'weed' but the tiny flowers sitting in the middle of a ruff of finely cut leaves are interesting and vaguely reminiscent of something.......can anyone put me out of my misery before I turf it out as it seems liable to take over

Yes, naggingly familiar to me, too!
Feels like a relative of yellow rattle (Rhinanthus), or elsewhere in Lamiales.
Ha! - How about Amaranthus retroflexus (pigweed)? (not Lamiales)

Thanks for that suggestion Mike - had considered that amongst many other things but decided no. Although it continued to grow, and take over the pot to the detriment of the other plants, it never looked likely to produce any terminal flowers, just those I described close to the stem and on the laterals. My first thought was a type of Mercury but that also proved no. In the end I turfed it out and forgot all about it until reading your post😊Perhaps one day I shall see a photo that reminds me again and will say 'Ah, that was that plant that I couldn't identify!'
