Lily - Canyonland IDd by Oron as Allium nevadense
« on: September 05, 2011, 07:44:06 PM »
I saw a small lily like plant early this summer in the Canyonlands National Park (soutwestern part of Utah), a high desert area which is part of the Colorado Plateau. I have searched all available sources (admittedly rather limited), but I am not able to find out what this was. The whole plant was small, around 15 cm in height, the flowers were rather large. The leaves were more or less gone, the remnants seemed to be rather long and narrow. The photo was taken in the beginning of June. At first I thought it was a Leucocrinum montanum (Star Lily/Mountain Lily), but it does not quite fit the description, could anybody help me?

Thank you, Oron. I found a species list of all the wildflowers in the national parks in that region, and checked all those belonging to the Liliaceae family except A. nevadense. The list was very useful, it covers both plants, animals etc in the Northern Colorado Plateau ( http://science.nature.nps.gov/im/units/ncpn/SpeciesSelect.cfm), so if I had not given up so soon--

Also, it dosnt have the typical Allium look, which makes it more difficult.
The flowers look more like the ones of an Ornithogalum.

I was sure that it was an Ornithogalum at first, but then I saw that they don't occur naturally in that part of the world. Do you know if it is commercially available?
