Cover Drawings of the Journal
« on: March 12, 2019, 03:13:15 PM »
I thought to snap the front covers of THE MEDITERRANEAN GARDEN, at least the ones with botanical drawing of plants, as opposed to drawings showing gardens. I was going to use these photos together with a postage stamp and hopefully a photo of the flower depicted on the stamp. However, today I came across  the cover drawing by Julie – Amadea Pluriel of Globularia alypum issue number 87, January 2017.

By coincidence I sent a photo of this flower to my friends this morning. We saw the plant by the roadside on our way back from Titani a couple of weeks ago

Not having a stamp depicting this plant but wanting to use the photo of the cover I have started a new thread

Well done, Hilary! Great idea. We saw this plant growing on a rock face in Morocco on a MGS trip there in 2014.

I have decided to post on this thread on  Saturdays giving you all plenty of time to add your photos of the depicted plant

Today I am posting the cover of THE MEDITERRANEAN GARDEN number 47, January 2007

Rudbeckia
The cover illustration of THE MEDITERRANEAN GARDEN number 53, July 2008,  is of Rudbeckia by Freda Cox

I am lucky enough to have several photos of this plant

One photo was taken on a very hot day oaf July 2011 in Madrid. This plant was identified for me by the Forum of THE MEDITERRANEAN GARDEN SOCIETY as Rudbeckia hirta Goldilocks

The close up is of Rudbeckia 'Little Gold Star’ seen at a garden center somewhere in the wilds of Essex in September,  2013

The third photo was taken in the garden of Hyde Hall in September 2015

Hi Hilary, I have forgotten to mention that I saw the most beautiful speciment of Globularia alypum last Saturday at Sparoza.  There was also one in Philodassiki Botanic Garden. I asked if they had any for sale but unfortunately the reply was no.  I did not leave empty handed though.  Rudbeckia , today's  photos are also very desirable.  I have bought many packets of seeds. A few years ago something germinated and grew and one kept regrowing for about 3 years but alas that died too.  I will try again Sometime!

Aesculus hippocastanus, Horse Chestnut

The cover illustration of THE MEDITERRANEAN GARDEN number 54, October 2008, is of
 Aesculus hippocastanus by Megan Toms.

The photo of the flower was taken in Madrid, April 2011.
 Inspired by the article
A MEDITERRANEAN ORCHARD IN THE CITY OF MADRID by Meye Maier
in THE MEDITERRANEAN GARDEN number 59,  January 2010
we visited this park on a Monday morning and had the place to ourselves.

The photo of the autumn trees was taken in Sparta and my son asks if anyone knows of any of these trees further south in the Peloponnese.
Unfortunately I don't have a photo of conkers

One of my childhood memories from Newcastle upon Tyne is of a huge Horse Chestnut tree in Jesmond Dene near the Armstrong Bridge. An uplifting sight when in flower

Thanks for the close-up view of the Horse Chestnut flower, Hilary. I have never looked that closely before, only taking in the general view of the tree laden with flowers. Also individually the flowers are very beautiful.
I have a small garden in Rome, Italy. Some open soil, some concrete, some paved. Temperatures in winter occasionally down to 0°C. Summer temperatures up to 40°C in the shade. There are never watering restrictions but, of course, there is little natural water for much of June, July and August.

Arbutus andrachne

The cover illustration by Veronica Hadjiphani-Lorenzetti of
THE MEDITERRANEAN GARDEN number 59, January 2010 is of Arbutus andrachne

Looking through my collection of photos of named plants I came across this one taken one dull October day in  2003 in the Botanical Gardens of Lucca.

There are many references to this plant in THE MEDITERRANEAN GARDEN and I have chosen FROM CHAPARRAL TO GARRIGUE:
CALIFORNIA PLANTS IN OUR NATURAL GARDEN by Olivier Filippi for you to read.
