Hilary, you might be interested in this plant of Podophyllum hexandrum that I saw some years ago in the very un-mediterranean surroundings of a cold damp Himalayan forest in Bhutan....

The leaf opens like a parasol, and then the flowers hang at the top of the stem but underneath the parasol

Hedera helix, Ivy

The cover illustration of THE MEDITERRANEAN GARDEN number 51, January 2008 is by Katharine Fedden.

The photo of ivy has been lurking on my computer since December 2016.
Now I see that the plant could have done with a good hose down!

Phlomis fruticosa, Jerusalem Sage

The cover illustration of THE MEDITERRANEAN GARDEN number 5, Summer 1996 was drawn by Derek Toms.

The last two photos are of municipal planting in Thessaloniki, May 2017.

Phlomis fruticosa is mentioned in PLANTS IN PATHS by Fleur Pavlidis.

Rhododendron trancongii

The cover illustration of THE MEDITERRANEAN GARDEN number 68, April 2012 is by Isik Guner.

Sorry no photo

There are many references to Rhododendrons in THE MEDITERRANEAN GARDEN but many seem to be rather negative.
However, I decided on

Another anonymous cover illustration of THE MEDITERRANEAN GARDEN this time drawn by Freda Cox.
Issue number 16, Spring 1999

Looking through this journal I find there are 9 articles which I have not yet recommended. I will have to do some homework.

In the same issue I read

I have now included a full page drawing used to illustrate this article based on a photograph supplied by Martin Wood

I germinated a seed of Ptilostemon chamaepeuce a few years ago and kept the plant going until last autumn when it died. I suspect we had too much rain for it last year. It never flowered for me  but the leaves and the shape of the plant were a pleasure in themselves. I have got more seeds to try again this year. Fingers crossed.
I have a small garden in Rome, Italy. Some open soil, some concrete, some paved. Temperatures in winter occasionally down to 0°C. Summer temperatures up to 40°C in the shade. There are never watering restrictions but, of course, there is little natural water for much of June, July and August.
