Dry, full-shade ferns
« on: October 04, 2018, 01:58:35 AM »
Does anybody grow any? It would appear that the following should be considered but I have read varying reports of how dry they can go.

Asplenium scolopendrium
Polypodium australe
Polypodium vulgare
Polystichum setiferum

I would be able to water them even on a regular basis but it would be good to have recommendations based on practical experience of those which are truly reliable in a dry, full-shade Mediterranean context.
I have a small garden in Rome, Italy. Some open soil, some concrete, some paved. Temperatures in winter occasionally down to 0°C. Summer temperatures up to 40°C in the shade. There are never watering restrictions but, of course, there is little natural water for much of June, July and August.
