Low bush with red berries ID'd by Caroline as Nandina domestica

Low bush with red berries ID'd by Caroline as Nandina domestica

This low bush was growing round one of  the statues of Goya in Madrid.
Does anyone recognise it?

I'm pretty sure it's a variety of Nandina domestica.  How tall was it - there are some low-growing more bushy varieties.

I am establishing a garden on Waiheke Island, 35 minutes out of Auckland. The site is windy, the clay soil dries out quickly in summer and is like plasticine in winter, but it is still very rewarding. Water is an issue, as we depend on tanks. I'm looking forward to sharing ideas. Caroline

I think it was about waist high.
Looking at other photos of Nandina domestica it looks the same if with fewer berries.

The number of berries is very variable.  I have one - "Richmond" - which is supposed to be prolific, but it is regularly eclipsed by the bush outside my hairdresssers.  :(
