Unidentified seed pod from tree
« on: October 11, 2016, 09:42:29 AM »
Last night Sally Beale in Mallorca asked if I knew what tree this seed pod came from. I don't (but it looks subtropical to me, rather aubergine-like!). Can anyone help, please?

My first thought is a Brachychiton of some description and the pod is still a bit green but it looks different enough to be something else altogether.
When opened does it have a bunch of row like seeds protected by fine hair like fibres?
I should add the fibres are very, very irritating so take care with them if they are there.
G'day from an Aussie in Spain. Currently attempting a total garden overhaul.

Have a look at this http://www.mgsforum.org/smf/index.php?topic=442.msg2499#msg2499 Asclepias thread. Not the same but it has similarities.

It is an immature Lagunaria patersonia's seed pod.
The little hairs covering the seed pods are terrible, they are like minuscule thorns and give a nasty irritation.

Pods on our Lagunaria patersonia taken from my 'study' window a couple of minutes ago.
