What I had thought to be Aloe squarrosa turns out to be Aloe juvenna

... now that I have invested in a few books on the matter it seems more likely that it is Aloe juvenna. What do you think? No flowers as of yet.

I have a small garden in Rome, Italy. Some open soil, some concrete, some paved. Temperatures in winter occasionally down to 0°C. Summer temperatures up to 40°C in the shade. There are never watering restrictions but, of course, there is little natural water for much of June, July and August.

A reply to my own question - I found this discussion on a forum. Seems to confirm I have A juvenna.
