Our main reason for making the day trip to Avila  from Madrid  was to walk on the medieval walls.
On hindsight an overnight stay would have been better, or at least an earlier train than the one we took..
We went during Easter week when various Easter related events took place in Avila, all of which we missed.
The walls are a joy to walk with views  the  over the countryside.
Although it is not possible to walk all of the circumference of the walls there is quite a long stretch to make you feel you have done your duty by then
At the entrance there are manicured green lawns  and tidy shrubs. However, around the corner the walls appear to  'grow' out of the rock.
I was pleased  to see many small children clambering among the rocks wearing their Easter best.
Where it was too difficult for the children to clamber there were several wild flowers and lots of Sedum
