Unusual ident

I have received an unusual request for an ident from someone who has recently moved house. In their new garden is a tree stump, see photos, and they are curious to know what it is, or at least was. The ruler is, apparently, 24cm long.
Any suggestions?

To me, the three vertical 'wings' (enations?) hint of cactus/succulent - along the lines of one of the arborescent euphorbias. The hints of green in the wings also smacks of succulent.

Euphorbia as a genus seems to exhibit several symmetries, in terms of degree, perhaps including 3x, as in the photo (including he central void).

For once, Google images are not helping much.
So I'm just stabbing in the dark.
