IDd as an Ajuga, Photinia, Coronilla and a Symphytum
« on: August 12, 2011, 03:29:39 PM »
We visited Madrid at Easter time this year and since then I have been trying to name the plant photos I took.
These are the remaining ones unidentified
I thought the small white plant might be Comfrey and the blue one some sort of Salvia but that is as far as I have got
Now how should I name this post?

No.1 = Ajuga reptans, looks pretty typical of the species, but could be a cultivar, I guess.
No.2 = looks familiar, but can't put a name to it; bit of a look of Sambucus about it, but it is not that
No.3 = no idea
No.4 = Symphytum album (yes - a comfrey)

Oron, while you  mention Coronilla valentina...
I have one in a pot (waiting for a planting place to be ready), so I should have recognized it!
But it has lost most of its leaves and is looking very shabby now. Some others I have seen in nurseries look almost as bad. Is this normal, ie. is it summer deciduous?
And, in this defoliated state, is it a good time to take cuttings?

Mike,

As you probably know, most Med. shrubs dislike to stay in  containers for long periods and often suffer from overwatering.
This is the case also with Coronilla, it should be planted on site as early as possible.
It can have  full sun or even some shade under trees.
Easily grown from seeds or by hard stem cutting in early winter.
In our hot area, i find that the best time for cuttings is early winter which is the natural growing time, also there is much less risk of fungus.
