Oron,
Many thanks.
Here are some more photos from the beginning of June.
I had forgotten we had stopped again at the same field.

I don't think it's Salvia verbenaca, Oron. Any other suggestions?

I'm not sure if it is geographically correct but the leaves resemble Salvia lyrata closely.

Fleur, what makes you doubtful about Salvia verbenaca? I can't think of any Greek salvia that looks more like Hilary's plant, especially the bristliness!

Fleur, Trevor and  Alisdair,
Thanks for your interest.
I am inclined to go with Oron's Salvia verbenaca.
I recently came across a website showing photos of wild flowers arranged by colours, among other things.
The photo of Salvia verbenaca is more or less exactly like the first photo I posted

What happened to the Italics?
I am sure I had enclosed the name Salvia verbenaca in Italics?

Hilary, I've fixed the italics - in the original version of your message you'd sort of doubled them, so that they both opened and closed before the plant name, then opened and closed again after it. When you're writing a message, the italic commands show with square brackets around them. To show how the doubling up looked when you were writing it, I've used ordinary round brackets instead - so that the website machinery doesn't automatically translate them as commands. Your original version looked like this (with square not round brackets of course) (i)(/i)Salvia verbenaca(i)(/i) but should have looked like this (i)Salvia verbenaca(/i).

Ooops, sorry i have missed all this..

The first one is Salvia verbenaca.

The second, in my opinion is probably Salvia pratensis, which has different texture of the leaves, larger flowers and as Fleur says sparce.

It isnt a location i would think to find this species but there are always surprises...

Oron,
Many thanks for the feedback.
I think I need to go back to the same field next spring and take more notice of the flowers I snap.

Also I wish you and your friend  all the best in your new venture
