Paeonia rhodia winter grower?
« on: April 20, 2014, 02:44:42 AM »
Hello,

Are Paeonia rhodia or P. clusii winter growers??  Any other species show that characteristic?  In my area Paeonia californica shows winter growth.

Thanks,

Nate

Nate,

All paeonia species growing around the Mediterranean are winter growers.

Leaves uaually appear around February to flower from April  to early June in higher elevations.

That includs the following species:

Paeonia algeriensis
P. cambessedesii
P. clusii
P. clusii subsp. rhodia
P. corsica
P. kesruanensis
P. mascula
P. officinalis
P. parnassica

Thanks!!  Lovely photos.  But I should have been clearer: what I meant by "winter grower", was leaf out upon the fall rains, as for Acanthus mollis.  The UK Rare Plant Nursery says P. clusii blooms "as early as Christmas".  I was wondering if there were other peonies as early.

Thanks, Nate
