Time out
« on: June 15, 2015, 07:47:19 AM »
Whilst I was writing a post I was interrupted a few times. When I came to preview my post, I got a message that told me I had run out of time and that I must resubmit my post again. As there was no way I was going to write it all again, it was lost.
How do I change the time allowed to write a post? As I am a computer moron, all of my posts take a long time to write.

Just a thought Daisy and don't know if it would work but if you wrote out your post as a word document and when it is complete right click, copy and paste directly on to your post?

Daisy, I'm afraid the time out settings can't be changed. Usually it should cope with even quite a lengthy message, though to be on the safe side if you know it's going to take a very long time to write you could always do as royscot suggests. But sometimes while you are writing it, it can happen that your internet connection is interrupted, and then the forum website's system can give you the error message you had. That has happened to me, but not for a few years....
I am sorry you lost all your work: how infuriating!

I sympathise, Daisy - it's happened to me too, and I should know better.

It can be annoying working in a word processor first because all you have is your words; you have to add all the forum formatting, links and images later.

Try this while typing in the forum reply box: Hit Ctrl-A (select all) and then Ctrl-C (copy) from time to time, and especially if interrupted or before you preview or post, and make sure you keep redoing it after you copy & paste anything else. If you can do this as a matter of habit it saves a lot of frustration.

By the way, paste is Ctrl-V. And on a Mac substitute Cmd for Ctrl. :)

Ha! I just lost this one and got it back cos I'd followed my own advice! :D

Such a warming feeling, isn't it, Pauline, when one's saved by following one's own advice!
