Do quiz-solvers expect the family or even the genus to be pin-pointed?
But this would not provide a cushion against incorrect answers...

It is a dicot, not a monocot. Looks like 5 petals (?). So we can skip the bulbs I suspect.

Almost there. Teasel family - Dipsacaceae. And yes, it is a scabious. My next clue would have been: "Simple Clues About Blue Inflorescences Often Seem Artificial".

I think I have tormented you enough and it is almost impossible to guess the species from the photo.
It is Scabiosa cretica (pincushion flower, Teasel family).

Thanks Alice, it was good fun during this wet weather we are experiencing . Now I must concentrate on catching up with Joanne who has mastered posting 'photos on her iPad ....well done Joanne, I am still trying to get photogene....
