Last night I thought it was Carthamus lanatus
This morning I think it was Scolymus hispanicus
Does anyone have a more definite idea ?

Between the two, I would say Scolymus hispanicus, Hilary.
Amateur gardener who has gardened in north London and now gardens part of the year on the Cycladic island of Paros. Conditions: coastal, windy, annual rainfall 350mm, temp 0-35 degrees C.

Alice,
Many thanks.
If I had just looked at the reference book with photos, rather than drawings, I would have decided much earlier that it was Scolymus hispanicus
