Succulent IDd by Oron as Malephora crocea
« on: August 02, 2011, 08:28:08 AM »
I have seen this succulent groundcover plant in several gardens in Cyprus. It flowers over quite along period in Spring-Summer; the flowers are red and don't last long. They don't seem attractive to butterflies (unfortunately). Though less floriferous than other somewhat similar succulent sprawlers, the longer flowering period is a bonus, and since they continue to expand vegetatively while flowering, they accomplish more ground-covering in a season (they root easily).

Mike,
The plant is Malephora crocea.
It is an excelent, resistant ground cover sutible for dry areas as well as coastl first line.
It belongs to the 'Ice plants' group but a better one as it blooms over many months.
Color of flowers change from Red-Purple when in bud to Orange sometimes yellow as flowers mature, there are also a few named veraities with darker flowers.
Off course very easy to grow from cuttings, just stick them directly in the ground.
