Retired veterinary surgeon by training with a PhD in parasitology,  but worked as a virologist since 1992.

Anemone (or maybe Ranunculus or Aquilegia) 'fruit' somewhere between petal fall and achene development?
No - Caltha might be a bit closer.
Anyway - some Ranunculid?
Actually - how about a Clematis tangutica flower bud? (no - it can't be that lumpy can it?)
arghhh!
Different tack - immature lychee fruit?
