Petra, Jordan, caper IDd by Oron as Capparis aegyptia
« on: July 25, 2011, 05:25:47 PM »
We saw this, the only plant in  the Siq, at  Petra, Jordan   at the end of October.
I liked the contrast between the red stone and the blueish green leaves.
I have been trying to identify it as some exotic plant, for me,  but wonder if it could just be Capparis spinosa. The photo is a bit fuzzy.
What do you think?

It is Capparis aegyptia,

Closely related to C. spinosa, used to be called C. spinosa var aegyptia or subsp. aegyptia but not long ago was elevated to a species status.
Recognized mainly by its blueish, glaucus leaves and its cascading habit.
Common on walls along the Great Riff and the deserts.

Min temp 5c Max 42c, around 450mm rain.

Thanks again for such a quick reply. I am thrilled to be able to put a name to this plant.

Hey, this looks stunning, where can we get this plant ??? I have managed to establish Capparis spinosa and C. inermis here (but only after killing a couple ..... ) and would love to try this one ! Finally got some capers to grow from seed .... not many .... but just enough to have some to put into the garden. Hurray !!!
