Rhynchophorus ferrugineus, Red palm weevil
When we visited the Royal Botanic Garden, Madrid in April 2018 we saw several of the palm trees, Phoenix canariensis wrapped up in netting. As you all know for the last few years the Canary island date palm has been in danger of attack by the Rhynchophorus ferrugineus, the red palm weevil. I asked my son M if he had a photo of this beetle and luckily for me one walked, or did it fly, through the window of his office this week
Here is a couple of photos taken in 2014 of Palm trees in Corinth under attack and a photo of son M examining the crown of a Palm tree in Sparta and of course the obliging red palm weevil posing for a photo

Hilary, the weevil is Horrible. It kill our beautiful palm a few years ago. I said ours but it was a 16th birthday present for our daughter from her ever first boyfriend.
