Title: Cover Drawings of the Journal
Post by: Hilary on March 12, 2019, 03:13:15 PM
I thought to snap the front covers of THE MEDITERRANEAN GARDEN, at least the ones with botanical drawing of plants, as opposed to drawings showing gardens. I was going to use these photos together with a postage stamp and hopefully a photo of the flower depicted on the stamp. However, today I came across  the cover drawing by Julie – Amadea Pluriel of Globularia alypum issue number 87, January 2017.

By coincidence I sent a photo of this flower to my friends this morning. We saw the plant by the roadside on our way back from Titani a couple of weeks ago

Not having a stamp depicting this plant but wanting to use the photo of the cover I have started a new thread

Rudbeckia
The cover illustration of THE MEDITERRANEAN GARDEN number 53, July 2008,  is of Rudbeckia by Freda Cox

I am lucky enough to have several photos of this plant

One photo was taken on a very hot day oaf July 2011 in Madrid. This plant was identified for me by the Forum of THE MEDITERRANEAN GARDEN SOCIETY as Rudbeckia hirta Goldilocks

The close up is of Rudbeckia 'Little Gold Star’ seen at a garden center somewhere in the wilds of Essex in September,  2013

The third photo was taken in the garden of Hyde Hall in September 2015

Hi Hilary, I have forgotten to mention that I saw the most beautiful speciment of Globularia alypum last Saturday at Sparoza.  There was also one in Philodassiki Botanic Garden. I asked if they had any for sale but unfortunately the reply was no.  I did not leave empty handed though.  Rudbeckia , today's  photos are also very desirable.  I have bought many packets of seeds. A few years ago something germinated and grew and one kept regrowing for about 3 years but alas that died too.  I will try again Sometime!

Aesculus hippocastanus, Horse Chestnut

The cover illustration of THE MEDITERRANEAN GARDEN number 54, October 2008, is of
 Aesculus hippocastanus by Megan Toms.

The photo of the flower was taken in Madrid, April 2011.
 Inspired by the article
A MEDITERRANEAN ORCHARD IN THE CITY OF MADRID by Meye Maier
in THE MEDITERRANEAN GARDEN number 59,  January 2010
we visited this park on a Monday morning and had the place to ourselves.

The photo of the autumn trees was taken in Sparta and my son asks if anyone knows of any of these trees further south in the Peloponnese.
Unfortunately I don't have a photo of conkers

One of my childhood memories from Newcastle upon Tyne is of a huge Horse Chestnut tree in Jesmond Dene near the Armstrong Bridge. An uplifting sight when in flower

Papaver rhoeas

The cover illustration by Yvonne Linardos of the very first issue of
THE MEDITERRANEAN GARDEN

The photo was taken on our recent two- day coach trip to Mani, Peloponnese.
Most of the photos I took on the trip feature stone, dilapidated stone houses and stone walls although the area was much greener, and yellower,  than I remembered from our last drive there.

This poppy, as you can imagine, is mentioned in many articles of

Cabbage Rose

The cover illustration of THE MEDITERRANEAN GARDEN number 60, April 2010, is by Megan Toms

I don't have any photos of a rose  named “cabbage rose” but from what I understand it is a rose with many petals.
Here are three photos of many petalled roses from my archives, two actually named.
One taken somewhere in Sparta in November  2011
‘Josephine Hooker’ seen in a garden center in the wilds of Essex, September 2013
‘Scepter’d Isle ‘ in the garden of Westminster Abbey , September 2013

Now to find something about cabbage roses in THE MEDITERRANEAN GARDEN
There are dozens of references to named roses but not the two I saw in the UK and not a mention of cabbage roses
Instead I am pointing you to read ENCHANTED BY SERRALVES by Ann Semaan Beisch where an old rose garden is mentioned

Hilary the roses are equally beautiful. I enjoyed looking at them trying to decide which I liked best. Our roses are almost over as it is too hot for them. The Pierre de Ronsard/i] are taking the heat.  One stick with 9 roses. Now it is time for our Rosa moschata. It has grown all over the mulberry tree but I decided to allow it to  flower before I get the pruning shears out.  My excuse is that they have a wonderful perfume.

Bougainvillea glabra and Bougainvillea glabra var. sanderiana

The cover drawing of THE MEDITERRANEAN GARDEN number 92, April 2018     is by Veronica Hadjiphani-Lorenzetti

Here are a couple of photos of our Bougainvillea in their healthier times. This year they got a horrible disease and I have had to cut them down. Now I am wondering if we shouldn't just buy a new plant rather than wait to see if the old ones regenerate. I do like the balcony, where we spend untold hours in the summer, to be presentable.

I was spoiled for choice of articles mentioning Bougainvillea in
THE MEDITERRANEAN GARDEN so in the end chose an article I have not referred to in the past.

Hilary, they do grow very well indeed in higher places in most Mediterranean countries. These ones were on a very shaly slope in the Peloponnese, only a very few miles from the sea as the crow flies, but a long climb up! (I find it very difficult to agree with those eccentric botanists who treat P. vulgaris as just a variety of P. acaulis....)

These fruit used to be popular in Cyprus but, as with many things, they are not to the liking of the younger generation. Possibly due to the fact that they need a bit of work before they can be eaten.
The photos were taken in 2013 when there were 3 trees surviving in a car park outside a storage warehouse in Limassol. Last year we noticed that they had suffered the fate of the majority of their brothers and had been cut down.

I germinated a seed of Ptilostemon chamaepeuce a few years ago and kept the plant going until last autumn when it died. I suspect we had too much rain for it last year. It never flowered for me  but the leaves and the shape of the plant were a pleasure in themselves. I have got more seeds to try again this year. Fingers crossed.

Tortoise

The drawing on the back cover of the very first THE MEDITERRANEAN GARDEN was drawn by Derek Toms as were the text illustrations.

One of my friends has an enclosed garden where any amount of tortoises enjoy a carefree life. When they reach a good size she takes them to some tortoise idyllic area in the countryside. The babies and young ones  are kept in her garden where they gorge on nasturtium  plants and any of her other plants they can reach . It becomes a problem during the summer when they have eaten all the leaves within their reach.

The first photo is of an old member of the tortoise family enjoying a dried up fig. The second photo was taken this February when the tiny tortoise hung around to have its photo taken but the larger one, probably a tortoise teenager, dashed off into the undergrowth

THE LOGO OF THE MEDITERRANEAN GARDEN SOCIETY

The logo, designed by Derek Toms I believe, was at first to be found on the title page of THE MEDITERRANEAN GARDEN.
Later it was decided to use it also on the back cover of the journal and it first appeared there in the July issue number 25, 2001

The logo depicts a Greek pithos and an acanthus mollis plant, Bear’s breeches, both often seen in Mediterranean gardens.

I have just read a short piece in THE MEDITERRANEAN GARDEN number 69, July 2012. SNIPPETS ON PLANT NAMES by John Joynes about acanthus and the logo of THE MEDITERRANEAN GARDEN SOCIETY

Now I don’t have a useful photo of an acanthus in front of a pithos. However, I do have a photo of ancient pithoi taken at Knossos in 1966. I am sure everyone who has been to Knossos has a photo of these large jars.
The photo of acanthus mollis was taken here in Corinth a few years ago

Just to round off this post here is a photo of the Corinthian capital of the fallen column at the Temple of Olympian Zeus in Athens. In 1965.
The second photo of the column shows how it is today, you can’t get anywhere near it

Referring to the post of 11th April featuring the wild carrot - Daucus carota - I found this plant very useful in my first, big Mediterranean garden. It would seed freely but was never a problem if caught early being easy  to pull out despite having a tap root. It can grow quite tall but is never really obtrusive having an airy overall appearance with finely dissected leaves and white umbels of flowers that enhance, rather than detract from anything it is near. An added pleasure for me was pulling out a plant to prove it was indeed a wild carrot when visitors asked what it was........only when they smelled the unmistakable carrot smell of the thin, pale, wiry root did they believe me.
Many fields left fallow here are beautiful when colonised by Draucus carota growing freely with Cichorium, a mist of white and blue amongst the grasses.

Title: Re: Cover Drawings of the Journal
Post by: Hilary on April 25, 2020, 07:39:24 AM
A while ago I realized that I was only scanning the journal cover illustration if it depicted a plant, the idea being to include a photo of the plant if I could and hopefully for others to add their photos. Now I am about to correct this by scanning the journal cover illustrations of gardens and scenes. I have photos of two or three of the places depicted but mostly they are of gardens still on my list to see.

Today we have the cover illustration   of THE MEDITERRANEAN GARDEN number 3, Winter 1995/6
As most of the illustrations in the early journals, the drawing was made by Derek Toms
The drawing depicts La Mortola

In this thread, in reply number 77, 7th March, I write about the tortoise illustration on the back of the first journal. Then in reply 85, April 4th, I write about the logo of  THE MEDITERRANEAN GARDEN SOCIETY  depicting an acanthus mollis plant in front of a pithos.

Recently looking through the journal number 73, April 2013 I read an article by Fleur Pavlidis
ILLUSTRATORS OF THIS JOURNAL: 1 DEREK TOMS where she gives information about this first illustrator of the journal and one of the founding members of this society. In the article she writes” I’ll be looking back at the art and artists who have given THE MEDITERRANEAN GARDEN its special visual attraction”

I have often thought that the illustrators are the unsung heroes of the journal and was pleased to find this article. However, I have not so far found a second article but then I haven’t looked extensively.

If for some reason Fleur could not continue writing about the illustrators it might be an idea for someone else who is looking round for something to write about. The names of three, no four, illustrators, who regularly contribute to the journal, quickly jump to my mind.

I have been fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to visit the garden on 2 separate occasions, once in the company of Heidi. It is one of the few remaining breeding sites for the Black Vulture and Heidi has given the property into the care of the Black Vulture Conservation Foundation. When we were last there they were maintaining it extremely well.
On the first visit Heidi requested that we did not take photographs. The ones below are from the second visit, trying to show the sheer size of the property. The last photo is of the MGS group enjoying a picnic lunch with the mountains in the background. The lady in the green top to the left of the picture is from the Black Vulture Foundation, unfortunately at this length of time I have forgotten her name.

Thanks for this Hilary. I just did a search on the internet for the garden and on their web pages they have a section which gives a list of plants that bloom for them month by month. Expecting to find one or two ideas for adding colour to some of the darker months I was amazed to find a list as long as your arm just for January. Anybody starting a mediterranean garden from scratch or wishing to add a splash of colour to an existing garden could well use this resource as a good starting point.

Glad you enjoyed it. I hadn't really thought about it before but the second part of the symphonic poem is entitled "Pines of the Catacombs" . The pines in my photo are directly above the Catacombs of San Marcellino and San Pietro and they extend for several kilometers underground. https://www.santimarcellinoepietro.it/english/ I look over my back wall onto The Mausoleum of Helena Augusta and, as tradition went, there would have been 2 laurel trees at the entrance to it. My street is Via dei due Allori (Street of the 2 Laurels). Nowadays, The Mausoleum is a refuge for the kestrels when the crows mob them. And the little owls are often to be heard screeching from there at dusk.

As you can see my "garden" is mostly the concrete roof of the catacombs. So, I have to use graded-size tubs to create the illusion of a border. Not quite the real thing, but... necessity is the mother of all invention. I use black garden bins and builders' mixing trays with holes drilled in them as pots. Much cheaper than pots. There are quite a few salvias in the photos, so a legitimate posting in this thread.

David, you certainly live in a 'historic area'.  Your certainly have talent to created a garden that looks so good.  The music associated with the pines was wonderful so perhaps  we should have a thread about plants and music. We have a Cypriot folk song called 'O voskos' translation 'the goatherd'. He greets the pines, poplars and the ever green myrtles and tells them he envies their long lives while he faces old age. Of course he does not think of wild fires or boring beetles.. It is played on the harp by Diana Rowan  and the other with the lyrics in the Cyprus dialect by   Christopher Sikkis on a bamboo flute.. It is on u tube.
