Post by: John J on October 04, 2015, 11:52:59 AM
Just returned from a CCSS visit to one of their member's garden. Below are a couple of the photos I took.

Always on the lookout for interesting ideas, I have logged the driftwood and rope idea. I wonder what it would look like with different types of containers? Something to mull over during the winter. Thanks.

That does look interesting - the craft markets will probably be swamped with them next year!
cheers

The 9th Annual Show of the Cyprus Cactus & Succulent Society (CCSS) was held in Nicosia today. From the day the CCSS was formed the Cyprus Branch of the MGS has had close ties with them, sharing a number of members including their President, Mary Michaelides. As Head of the Cyprus Branch I have always attempted to attend as a show of support and have seen them grow ever more popular year on year. This year was no different and below are a few snaps that I took before having to dash back to Limassol to be at my wife's nephew's 50th Birthday lunch. :D

Obviously very popular too. I've put one of John's own cactuses on the cover of the MGS Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/mediterraneangardensociety) today - thanks for the photo, John!

Hilary, the venue is a green area on the outskirts of Nicosia called Akropolis Park. There are caves in one area that have been converted into Exhibition/Conference Rooms and this is where the exhibits in the various competition categories are displayed. Outside the caves is a sunken area where the Cactus & Succulent specialist nurseries set up their stalls to sell their wares.
Alisdair, you may not have recognized it but these are the caves that we used in the 2009 AGM that was held in Cyprus for Mary and Oron to give their fascinating talks.

I have enjoyed reading the recent posts and the information given regarding succulents and decided to post some more photographs of  this year's CSS exhibits.  I wanted ' readers'  to see how dedication gets results.  Nine years ago the desire to become 'environmentally friendly' in their lives a group of ladies with the help of their loved ones started the society and since then they have managed to persuade so many other gardeners to give up their thirsty 'lawn'  and instead cultivate succulents and cacti. I am proud to be a member of their society even though we had no lawn to give up. The succulents  and cacti in our garden have taken the harshness of our hot dry summers and flourished.

A few more photos and also our Epiphylum. Don't you love the 'paper pink' flowers of the Hoodia in the special exhibits? I have been promised one when I next visit the 'group'.
