Title: Another unknown thistle
Post by: JTh on December 05, 2014, 04:36:58 PM
I have looked through all the thistles here and at hundreds of photos on the internet, but can't find any resembling this one, which I saw in the Imbros Gorge last April. The leaves formed a nice rosette, they were shiny green, whiteveined and very spiny. The leaves were thick and stiff, not hairy. No flowers seen. Can anybody help me identifying it?

Thanks for answering, Pamela. At least from photos I have seen, the Cirsium you mentions seems to be hairier than the one I saw, and the shape of the leaves is different.

Here is another thistle, this one on a path going down from the Omalos plain (Crete). It is a lot spinier than the first one, the incisions of the leaves are much deeper, and the white markings much more conspicious, I wonder if this could be Galactites tomentosa?

Hi Jorun, I was going to suggest Galactites tormentosa for the first one.....can you remember/ did you look - the undersides of the leaves should be white if so. I used to grow it in England just for the beauty of the leaves but strangely have never got round to using it here  :)

Hi Jorun,

Don't know if I am the only person affected by this. I can see the first picture but for the second without a yahoo account I can't open it :)

Can you see it now? Flickr sometimes changes permissions, I don't know why, but it should be publicly available now.

I have made some cropped images showing more details of the leaves, the top one (1), from the Peloponnes, was preciously identified as Galactites tomentosa by Oron, the second (2) is from the Imbros Gorge, which is the same as the one I started this thread with, and the last one (3) the thistle from Omalos.

1 (G. tomentosa): Spiny, very long vertical spines starting from the central nerve
2: broader lobes, spines much shorter, especially the  vertical spines near the central nerve, very broad at the base. Shiny, leathery leves
3: Longer lobes, very spiny, the vertical spines more well defined but not as long as in 1

Yes I can see it now. No idea what the thistles are though. Sorry.

Thanks for looking, anyhow. Nobody else out there?
