Title: Pelargoniums
Post by: Daisy on November 18, 2013, 06:52:42 AM
I have found a lot of seedlings around some white zonal Pelargoniums.
Does anyone know if these are likely to come true?
Daisy :)

Will the seedlings come true fro seed? Who knows? But won't it be fun to find out. They should flower within one growing season so any 'wrong' colours can be weeded out - or kept if you like them.

Hi Daisy,
how did those seedlings go?
I'm not sure if this entry should go here or in the "Bulb/Geophyte" section -
I got this Pelargonium auritum var. carneum from the Annual Plant Lovers' Fair at Mt Macedon (Victoria, Australia) in September 2013,
cheers

With such interesting rarities, that Plant Lovers' Fair must be fun!

Indeed it is, Alisdair!
When this one at Mt Macedon started it was one of just a handful of such events in Victoria. Now many groups hold them - often with many of the same retailers present - and the club I belong in the Dandenongs, east of Melbourne, the Ferny Creek Horticultural Society, has one in two weeks time! It's usually a good chance to buy something special, but more often we spend the time catching up with people we know ;D
We can't get to every one of these sales but average two or three a year. As we're members of FCHS we don't have to pay the $5 entry fee - the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show costs $27 to enter ($19 concession) so we don't tend to go unless we're supporting a group who get free tickets! Last year we spent a few hours manning the stand for the Bulb Group and got an hour off to have a look at the Show and buy a few things. Next week the Open Garden Scheme has their Plant Fair and entry to that is "only" $15! These last two are huge events over a large area with huge commercial interests involved and very crowded on the weekends so I'm not that keen on them nowadays. The first two are less "successful" so are much less stressful to attend!
