Title: Climber Nursery
Post by: Daisy on August 01, 2011, 03:47:43 PM
Does anybody know of a nursery that specialises in Mediterranean and sub tropical climbing plants?
Whenever I try to google a climber like Thunbergia grandiflora, for example, all I get is nurseries in the U.S.A.
There is not much in Europe it seems.

The one I really cherish in Italy is La casina di lorenzo. The owner, Davide, is a completely addicted plantsman with a special hand in propagating plants. I don't particularlylike their website, but the choice of plants is impressive (mind you: they have MORE than what is shown on the on line catalogue). http://www.lacasinadilorenzo.com/

Another one to add to the list - thanks again, Alessandra!

Thank-you Alessandra. This nursery seems to have lots of climbers.
When you have a garden as tiny as mine, the only way is up!!! ;D

You could also try www.malvarosa.it. This  nursery is in Sicily, and has a huge collection of Pelargonium (the whole lot: mostly scented-leaved and botanical, but also hundreds of vars including star-flowered, cactus flowered, variegated, mini, macrantha etc etc) plus many Jasminum, which would do wonders for you.
(As a side bonus, they run a lovely bed and breakfast)
By the way, I find that pelargoniums are great ground cover for half shaded or shaded spots in our climate, that is how we grow them here.

Thanks yet again, Alessandra, I've added them too to the list (http://www.mgsforum.org/smf/index.php?topic=158.msg504). They certainly look like having a splendid range of pelargoniums.

I know this reply is very late but I have only just seen your original message on the forum. Two nurseries in Italy which supply climbers by mail order are:

http://www.tropicamente.it/home/index.htm
http://www.vivaipriola.it/

Hope this helps :-)

David, thanks for chipping in with that. If they mail outside Italy we'll probably add them to the suppliers list.

The two nurseries I listed have excellent mail order service. Both supplied plants to me in excellent condition and at a low transportation cost. Don't know if they supply outside Italy, sorry.

Two suppliers of bulbs, if you don't have them on your list already, are:

http://www.florianabulbose.eu/
http://www.raziel.it

I haven't used their online service but I have bought excellent quality bulbs from them on several occasions.

I imagine both of these sellers will be at the plant fair in Rome next weekend for anybody who is in Rome then. www.laconservadellaneve.it

Belatedly saw these latest suggestions; very helpful, I'll add them to our list next time I revise it.
Thanks!

They don't do Thunbergia but I found http://www.roselandhouse.co.uk most helpful in finding a passiflora I couldn't get in France and they have an extensive range of clematis as well.  My order arrived three days later to S France and only £24 delivery for eight plants. So helpful and reasonable.
