Title: Echinops sp. (graecus or spinosissimus?) on a greek hillside, near Nafplio
Post by: GabrielParis on September 09, 2012, 05:56:51 PM
When I'm in Greece, I spend most of my time on the south-facing hill next to the house taking some pictures, admiring the landscape and the vivid colours of the sky... and of course comparing the species I find in the phrygana with my two bibles (Polunin's 'Flowers of Greece' and Mrs Tyrwhitt 'Making a garden on a greek hillside').

Unfortunately, I have not been able to find the right species for this one... Does anyone know if this Echinops is a E. graecus or a E. spinosissimus ? Or maybe another species ?

Thanks in advance !
Gabriel

A bit of a guess really from your nice photo. Possibly E. sphaerocephalus. One of the two pale flowered Greek Echinops which is said to have less spiny heads than E. spinosissimus.

Thank you John for your quick response and nice comment.
We shall see if some other Echinops lovers tend to confirm this...

eIt resembles E. sphaerocephalus which I grew from seed collected on the mainland coast opp. Evia.
