Title: Peloponnese October crocus ID'd as Crocus boryi (with Colchicum cupanii)
Post by: Hilary on January 24, 2013, 08:10:38 AM
We came across a field, or rather whole area, of these dew covered crocus in October last year.
Any ideas for their proper names?

Certainly looks very like C. aleppicus, but that's actually restricted to Israel and Jordan. Yours is Crocus boryi - the prominent white anthers, showy orange much-branched style, and uniformly creamy white flowers with just a yellow throat but no other colour are the give-aways.
The other plant looks like Colchicum cupanii.

Alisdair,
Many thanks for the identification of both the crocus and colchicum.
