The Rose Garden in Rome is usually only open for 2 months of the year in late spring. This year it was open in autumn for a couple of weeks. I thought it might be useful if I posted the names and a photo of the 100 or so that were in flower in the autumn. This information could be a starting point for anybody looking for roses that will survive a mediterranean climate. The roses are laid out in a very exposed way so they have no shade from the sun and/or drying wind. I don't know how much summer water they get. I will take them in alphabetical order. There are around a hundred of them but the garden itself has many hundreds. I only took photos of those in flower.
To start the ball rolling here is 'Abbaye de Cluny'
-
Beautiful colour! It will take you sometime to post them all and we will certainly enjoy them. Every year Michalis at the Zygi nursery brings healthy plants with beautiful blooms. They are grown in Northen Greece. We have tried a few and for the first two years they are fine. They struggle if not given water in the summer. Maybe one of your photos will match his and then I will give in again and buy it.
-
Interesting project David, shall look forward to your photos.
-
David, this is such a good idea! Many thanks. As you can see, I've given it its own thread.
-
Here is 'Anastasia'
-
'Annelies' is today's rose.
-
Great. I love the idea of a rose a day
-
Me too. If I can not grow them I might as well admire them every day. Thank you David.
-
Any yellow or orange roses blooming on big plants? I’m re-doing my rose bed and that’s what I’d like to fill it with where I’m outing oleander and plumbago and lots of poly gala seedlings.
-
For today we have 'Arthur Rimbaud'
-
Hi Fleur,
Looking through the photos I have I didn't find any truly orange ones. The following all have some pink hue as well as orange. Try 'Meilouvea', 'Lapural' and (one of my favourites) 'Morning Sun'. As for yellow, a little more luck here. 'Banzai', 'Judit', 'Marco Polo', 'Tequila', 'Solo Mio', 'Vendee Globe' and 'Spahi' might be of interest to you. I can't say anything about size as all the bushes are clipped to a uniform size in the garden. Photos of all the above will come up here as I get to them alphabetically but you could look them up on the internet in the meantime. Good luck with your replanting plans :-)
-
Hi Fleur. We are also re organizing the side garden by pulling out plants that have suffered the last two years from lack of water. We are planning to use some succulents. I have looked through the www.avramis.gr info@avramis.gr catalogue. There are a few beautiful orange and yellow roses. They might fit your colour scheme. Our 'Adreanna's perfum' (dark velvety red) from Avramis, has been performing well and is still alive. Good luck with your search.
-
What a wonderful website! All the essential information so quickly available even giving a scent rating out of 5. I noticed the prices too. A quarter of the price you would pay in Rome for a rose. For sure this would be a great supplier for Alisdair's European distribution list. If it isn't already on it, that is. Thanks :-)
-
It's past midnight so I am justified in saying that today's rose is 'Balbo'
-
Hi Fleur,
Have you thought about Rosa chinensis mutabilis? I have three big bushes doing exceptionally well and the colour range might suit. I don't really prune them, just let them romp away on a clay bank which i don't water.
Cheers
-
The next one up is "Banzai", which fits with your request for yellow roses Fleur.
-
The next rose is 'Benoit Friart'
-
A very simple rose for today, 'Birichina'.
-
Next in line is 'Blues'. Quite where the name came from, I'm not sure.
-
For today we have 'Bolchoj'.
-
And now for 'Bordeaux'. One more B to go and then we start with the Cs.
-
One more for the pot, "Broceliande"
-
David I liked the first photo you posted, the yellow rose, but today's is really lovely.
-
Hi Charithea
Today's is different to the 2 that you have liked so far, 'Cecele Brunner'
-
Hi David. Thank you for our daily rose. Our rose bushes from Northen Greece have responded to the rainy days we had. It is surprising how quickly they have come alive. Our Rosa damascena[/hi] have not got any leaves as yet. Other years they would have had roses perfuming the place. Years ago I bought a rose that had 'speckled' petals. It looked lovely but it has not flowered since then. Maybe it will this year having had the water. If so I shall proudly 'post' the photo of it.
-
We have had Cécile Brunner in England for over 20 years, excellent for cutting, not very thorny, and less blackspot-prone than many of our old roses. I think there's a climbing sport too.
-
Another pale pink rose today - I am sure you will find better pictures of flowers fresher than those in this photo. At least it gives an idea what the flower looks like. 'Centenaire de Lourdes'
-
If you thought yesterday's rose was looking a little worse for wear, here is another one that you'll need to look up elsewhere to get a true idea of what it looks like. 'Chewjackbelt' actually looks very nice here:
www.bing.com/images/search?view=detailV2&ccid=%2fbRtldH8&id=74D122EF464434200AF5BCF01DA62E08C56E3385&thid=OIP._bRtldH8WiyjbONhQoZRAwHaFc&mediaurl=http%3a%2f%2fc8.alamy.com%2fcomp%2fD7AA80%2fa-specimen-of-chewjackbelt-rose-D7AA80.jpg&exph=956&expw=1300&q=rose++chewjackbelt&simid=608036444095711011&selectedIndex=0&ajaxhist=0
-
So much for alphabetical order! This one slipped through the net and should have been before the last one. It is 'Cherry Bonica'.
-
David I looked up the chewjackbelt rose and I liked the variety very much. I think though the dark coloured ones are more beautiful.
-
Here is "Colijn" which is darker than the "Chewjackbelt".
-
Very similar to the last rose, today we have 'Commandant Cousteau'
-
For your delectation today, we have 'Damaya'.
-
And 'The Dark Lady' follows as today's rose.
-
Hi Fleur
Looking at the last 2 postings, I thought I had posted 2 different pictures of the same rose but with different names. I haven't as it turns out but while looking up the 2 roses concerned I came across this: https://www.rose.it/rose/rose-inglesi/golden-celebration-ausgold which might just fit the bill for the big yellow rose you are looking for? Sounds like it grows very big in mediterranean type climates. Just an idea, I have no personal experience of it. Although the link is to an Italian page, if you like the look of it I am sure you will be able to find something in other languages on the internet.
-
Thank you David for the rose site. Fleur the Abraham Darby is irresistible.
-
'Deborah' is today's rose.
-
Strange coincidence today. The posting is late because I had an Irish friend visiting. The name of today's rose is an Irish name 'Delaney Sister' a different looking rose to the last 2 or 3 which looked very similar to each other.
-
I love to start my day with one of your rose photos. A delicate pink rose today, thanks
-
I agree with Hilary, David! You might be interested in this Wikipedia note (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Having_Our_Say:_The_Delany_Sisters%27_First_100_Years) on the Delany sisters, who were the remarkable (and very long-lived) daughters of the first Black man to be made a bishop of the US Episcopal Church - no doubt the very popular book titled The Delany Sisters which was published in 1993 encouraged the hybridiser Benjamin Williams to name his best rose after them, though the rose was not marketed until the year after his death. Apparently Mr Williams had met both sisters.
-
Thanks to all who have commented on these postings. The article was interesting Alisdair and the sisters sound like very characterful women. It prompted me to double check the label of the rose in the Rome Rose Garden which reads 'Delaney Sister' rather than the plural. This is clearly an error as the rose comes up as 'Delaney Sisters' on google search.
For today there is 'Dornoar'. Trying to find this rose on the internet, I came up with nothing. Interestingly though, the auto suggestion offered me "rosa dornoar dorieux francia" which is exactly what is written on the label in the Rose Garden. Still no web pages came up, however. A mystery.
-
Thank you David, Thea and Caroline for your suggestions. I went to the English growers looking for some of them but they were so expensive! £23 for a bare root rose seemed exorbitant to me. My young gardener scolded me or even thinking of importing from the UK so instead I tried Thea’s nursery in northern Greece and bingo lots of lovely yellow and gold roses properly named and with a rating for scent. I ordered 13 yesterday - so much for saving money - but I found a couple of D Austin roses for just €9 each and the rest were about €5 including Golden Celebration. They should be arriving after Christmas.
-
Hi Fleur, Y
es I noticed the prices too in Thea's recommended site (my posting in this thread 29/11), an enormous difference compared to the average Italian price
Today's offering, the first of the 'Es' is 'Ecrins
-
Hi David,
I love this thread!
I couldn't find anything on 'Ecrins' but it looks a lot like the Hybrid Tea 'Elina'
cheers
fermi
-
Yes, it doesn't look quite like the rose shown by the German rose firm Poulsen named Ecrins, in their range of roses named after national parks - apparently Ecrins is named after this national park in the French Alps (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%89crins_National_Park)
-
Certainly looks much more yellow in Poulsen's photo, doesn't it. http://www.poulsenroser.com/assortment/rose-collections/national-parks/ecrins.aspx
-
Rose 'Elle' for today.
-
I don't seem to be having much luck with the rose photos I have been trying to post recently. The roses look very different in the catalogues than they do in the Rose Garden. Here is a case in point. The official website of 'Eureka' shows a yellow rose, so the one I photographed must have been sun-bleached or washed out by the rain.
https://meilland.com/en/catalogue/eureka-meizambaizt/
Enjoy it anyway :-)
-
It's really good to see them in real life - and that Eureka still looks very pretty!
-
Today's rose is also a bit of a mystery. 'Evebicol' doesn't come up on an internet search except as a posting in a blog which may also be useful for those searching for roses suitable for mediterranean climates http://neusnogue.blogspot.com/2017/06/el-roserar-del-parc-de-cervantes-de.html. The supplier is the same there as it is of the rose in Rome but an internet search doesn't bring up anything for that supplier.
-
The photo I took of today's rose, 'Everati', is hopelessly out of focus. In trying to find a better one on the web I came across this site which may be of interest to readers in Italy or elsewhere https://www.airosa.it/regine.asp?id=14&title=Regine%20d'Europa
This is the last rose I have whose name begins with "E". So, a good place to take a break for Christmas and New Year as I shall be in the UK for 2 weeks from today. Hope you all have a good time over the holidays. :)
-
I am back in Italy and back to work so it is time to pick up where I left off on this thread. Hope everyone had a good time over the break. Today I start 2019 on the letter "F" with "Fanfare". What could be a more appropriate name than that?
-
Welcome back to you and your roses David. Our rambling rose, named by the nursery as Banksia with thorns and much bigger blooms then the normal ones, are in flower. They are too high to photograph but soon the lower branches will have ones and we shall post photos. The rains have done miracle as the other roses from Northen Greece are full of fresh green leaves and flower buds too.
-
Thanks Charithea for your welcome back and good to hear that your roses are doing well after your recent rains. Today we have "Fanny Ardant". Hope you and other readers like it.
-
Very beautiful, soft coloured rose.
-
Next up is "First Blush", Don't know about you but my first blush was many moons ago.
-
Today's rose is "Flash"
-
'Fragrance des Jardins' brings "F" to a close
-
Very inviting colour David.
-
It is a nice pink, isn't it Charithea. Today's rose, 'Gartenpass' is a little more subdued but I like it all the same.
-
It is rather unusual in its colouration but why not!
-
A more traditionally coloured rose today, 'Glamour' I found a better picture here http://www.poulsenroser.com/assortment/rose-collections/paramount/glamour.aspx which probably gives a better idea of what it looks like earlier in the season.
-
David your photo dipcts 'promise of things to come' compared to the photo in the website. I have noticed that the leaves have the problems that ours exhibit in the summer.
-
From 'Glamour' to 'Gorgeous'. Only problem is that 'Gorgeous' was a bit past her best when I took her photo. Here is a link to a better one. https://www.bakker.com/en-gb/p/large-tea-rose-paramount-gorgeous-M57599
-
YES. It is gorgeous in its prime like most thing.
-
Today 'Grenada'.
-
Another red rose today, 'Hacienda'. There is a bit of information and a better photo here https://www.monaconatureencyclopedia.com/rosa-hacienda-2/?lang=en
-
'Hans Gonewein' was the dedicatee of this rose as you can read here. http://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=2.61367.0
-
Hans Gonewein - that looks a lovely one, David; and much better foliage than some; thanks again for all these!
-
Looking up "Ice Cap", which is today's rose, I saw on Dave's Garden that - "Ice Cap" is a trademark. The cultivar name is 'MEIradena'. "https://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/222734/
-
Some basic information re 'Jardin D'Enteoulet', can be found here http://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=2.77347.0
-
Today's rose is a bit late but better late than never, as they say. 'Jardins de France'
-
I hadn't realised how badly focussed the photo was. I haven't got a better one but I think it gives the idea. Here is a link to a better photo https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/85/Rose_Jardins_de_France_20070601.jpg
-
'Jubilè Papa Meilland' for today. https://meilland.com/en/catalogue/jubile-papa-meilland-meiceazar/
-
That's a stunner!
-
"Judit! is the name of this one. The label indicates its origin as Romanian and there is a reference t Wagner too. But I can find no further reference to this rose.
-
To start the 'Ks' we have 'Karen Blixen'. A little more about the rose can be found here https://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=2.3578.0
-
What a lovely rose. Lovely enough to start off the day. I must be off to do some more grouting.
-
Lovely Rose with an interesting name. Looks as if it is as strong as the person it was named after.....
-
Another rose presumably named after someone. 'Katie Gordon'. A very quick search on the internet came up with nothing. Work is calling me so I can't look any further at the moment. However, if I do find any more information, I'll post the link.
-
As the name suggests, something a little smaller for today. 'Kleiner Ritter'. A little info here http://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=2.76425.0
-
"Kordes' Jubilee" is the next in line. Basic info here: https://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=2.67219.0
-
Another "mystery" rose for today, 'Korlausblas'. The label shows this name and the supplier (breeder?) as Kordes, Germany. They can be found here https://www.kordes-rosen.com/ but there is no sign of this rose.
-
'Korunrok' is another rose listed under Kordes but with no trace of it either on their German or Italian site. There is mention of 'KORunrok' as one of the parents of another rose, 'Soul Sister', here http://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=2.67470
-
Sorry, a correction. The new hybrid I refer to immediately above as 'Soul Sister' is, in fact, named 'KORconvent'.
-
David, one or two other sites very briefly mention Korunrok as a cream apricot floribunda which won a Rome prize in 2004.
-
Certainly is a nice colour and form, Alisdair. I'm not surprised it won a prize. The prize giving in Rome is around June when the gardens are open to the public. Thanks for the extra information :)
-
I must say that the rose that I photographed, 'La Belle Rouge', and the photo in the link look like very different roses. http://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=2.32837.0
-
The picture of it here https://rozenvrienden.be/pdf/Nieuwsbrief%20juli-augustus%202018.pdf (https://rozenvrienden.be/pdf/Nieuwsbrief%20juli-augustus%202018.pdf) looks much more like your picture, David - maybe it's just that real life is a bit different from its publicity pictures!
-
I think you are right Alisdair. A bit like comparing me first thing in the morning when I look at myself in the mirror and what miracles can be achieved in selfies with just the right amount of lighting and a well-chosen angle. Here is the last rose for a couple of days as I am away to Naples this evening for a break. 'La Feiullerie' with some information here http://helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=2.65571
-
http://www.helpmefind.com/gardening/l.php?l=2.69116.2&tab=1 gives some information about today's rose 'LandLust'
-
Very lovely colour. London is sunny but does not have the spring flowers which abound now in Cyprus.
-
'La Petit Prince' and some information too at https://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=2.47328.0
-
I was hoping to find a rose with a name related to Valentine or some derivative but no luck. So here is today's rose in the usual alphabetical order, a beautiful rose nonetheless, 'Lapural'.
-
'Leo Ferré' for today with some further information here: https://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=2.43270.0
-
The San Remo music festival has just finished here in Italy and here is a Rose by the same name. Not a good photo I am afraid but it gives an idea of what the rose looks like. 'Luci di San Remo'
-
'Madame Anisette' with some more information here: https://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=2.69540.0
-
After San Remo another "Italian theme" rose for today, 'Marco Polo'. More information here: http://www.helpmefind.com/gardening/pl.php?n=4099
-
For today "Marie Curie" of which, more here http://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=2.18386
-
http://www.helpmefind.com/rose/pl.php?n=19817 gives some information about Rose 'Martine Guillot' which is today's rose.
-
http://www.helpmefind.com/gardening/l.php?l=2.6245.1&tab=1 gives more information and a much better photo of 'The McCartney Rose' which was decidedly past its best when I photographed it in the Rome Rose Garden!
-
'Meicellie' is the next of the roses beginning with 'M'. I found this on the web. https://www.airosa.it/concorso/2005/concorso2005.htm
-
Another mystery rose for today. All I can find about 'Meilapiazel' is that, according to the label in the garden, it is a Richardier 2009 rose.
-
Apparently Meilapiazel won the 2009 Fragrance Prize at the Bagatelle's new varieties rose show, sweeping the board as it also won the public's and the children's fragrance prizes there. It was reported to have a very very appealing scent, reminiscent of raspberries and lychees - and to have beautifully shaped buds. There are a couple of photos of it on the Bagatelle's website (http://www.perso-jardins-bagatelle.net/site_htm/htm/rose2009.htm), but Michèle Richardier-Meilland doesn't seem to have put it into production.
-
Thanks for that information Alisdair. :) For today here is 'Meilouvea'. Another Richardier rose which is elusive.
-
'Meiroruro' is another rose of which I can find little information. It is mentioned as the prize winner "Premio per l’arredo urbano
1° Richardier, Meilland (Francia) var. MEIroruro" at Monza, 2012 here http://www.rosemania.it/?p=1619.
-
A little more information about today's rose, 'Modern Art' here http://www.helpmefind.com/gardening/l.php?l=2.4345
-
Now on to the Ns with 'Neige Parfum' https://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=2.47622.1
-
'Nirperfu' for today, a rose from www.nirpinternational.com in 2010. But no information on the web pages which are being updated.
-
David, according to the World Rose News (http://www.worldrose.org/assets/v21-n3-world--rose--news%2C-june-2010.pdf) NIRPerfu was judged the best rose overall, in the 2010 Rome rose trials.
-
Thanks Alisdair. Certainly is an attractive rose, at least to my taste in roses.
-
Rose 'Nostalgie' with, it has to be said, not one of the best photographs. However, there are lots of references to this rose with much better photographs on the internet, including this one http://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=2.32401
-
'Notturno' for tonight. http://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=2.24861.0 for more photos and some info.
-
Onto "O" in the alphabet now with 'Osiana'. More here https://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=2.4608.1&tab=1
-
If I can leap into your thread, David, our Damask roses are coming into their own following the rain we've had this winter.
-
I can't believe how much time has passed since I last posted a rose - thanks John for keeping things going. Apart from the colour, your rose looks very much like the artichokes which are on sale here in Rome at the moment. Large and spherical. Here is the rose for today, Rose "Papillon" with more info here www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=2.4644.0&tab=1 :-)
-
And with the photo this time! :)
-
'Parfum de Nuit' and some more information here http://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=2.42917.0 Let's see if I can remember to attach the photo first time round ths time!
-
'Pastella' for today. More here http://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=2.37041 Pastella means "batter" in Italian - in the food sense. Maybe because of its colour or maybe nothing to do with the Italian word at all?
-
My photo of 'Paul Ricard' doesn't show the rose in full bloom so there are more photos here http://www.helpmefind.com/gardening/l.php?l=2.4686
-
Rose "Petrina" which does not get a very good write up here http://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=2.51173.0&tab=1and my photo isn't very flattering either :-(
-
Hi All
Lovely rose pictures.
Just a thought.
Does the type of rose make a difference to viability and survivability?
Are the old rose types that don't repeat more suited to the warmer climate?
Patrick
-
The only rose in Rome Rose Garden which was in flower last autumn and which began with "Q" was Queen Mary 2. https://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=2.37406.1
-
Hi Speedozz. Can't really answer your question as I know nothing about roses. The idea was simply to post photos of some of those growing in Rome so that anybody interested in finding roses suitable for hot dry summers would some ideas of roses to consider.
Today's rose looks a lot different in my photo to the ones here http://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=2.71038.3&tab=36 'Rayon de Soleil' seems to be a washed out pink in my photo but the rose is bright yellow. Looking carefully at my photo you can see traces of yellow and on one of the photos on the photos page of the link you can a bush with fresh and faded flowers.
-
I shall try to write in good English today, though I hope you were able to guess what the missing words were in yesterday's post. Today we have 'Reverie' and there is reference to 2 different roses with this name here https://www.helpmefind.com/rose/plants.php?searchNmTyp=5&searchNm=reverie&rid=4072&sbSearch=SEARCH&tab=1. I am not so sure from the descriptions/photos given that this is the same rose. The label in Rome Rose Garden reads "rose reverie, Croix Francia 1977"
-
Seems the plant of Rosa 'Rivierenhof' in Rome had measles the day I photographed it. No such spots on the photos here https://www.helpmefind.com/gardening/l.php?l=2.42901&tab=36
-
Don't know quite what to do. On the one hand, how could I skip a rose called ? Roma di Notte'? On the other hand. it seems the rose has been mislabelled. Here is my photo but compare it to the photos here https://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=2.67712&tab=1 and you will see what I mean! could it be this 'Bella Roma' https://www.helpmefind.com/gardening/l.php?l=2.36720.2&tab=36, or this https://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=2.38534&tab=1' Lidi di Roma'?
-
Here is 'Rosa Luz' a little more information here: https://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=2.51238.3&tab=1
-
Not much information seems to be available on 'Rosiere de France' apart what little there is here: https://www.helpmefind.com/gardening/l.php?l=2.75302.1&tab=1
-
'Rosy Carpet' for today. http://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=2.2390&tab=1
-
"Royal Copenhagen" gives a change to the predominantly pink roses of late. More information and photographs here https://www.helpmefind.com/gardening/l.php?l=2.39938&tab=1
-
Lovely rose David. We went to Pissouri Beach this morning to collect our 7 year old grand daughter who has been on a three day cycling break and she showed us around the hotel garden. There were some rather beautiful roses , white, deep red, pink etc. Only one had perfume and besides that non had a label.
-
I hope your visit gave you some inspiration for roses for your garden Charithea. Here is another you might consider, 'Royal Garden' https://www.helpmefind.com/gardening/l.php?l=2.72992&tab=1
-
Hi David. The rose is lovely but I am not going to be tempted. We have a deep velvety red that is in bloom now. It came from Adelaide via a cousin. There are 3 other roses that are getting ready to open. For the first time there are 3 rose buds on my Pierre de Ronsard. The rain has really helped.
-
After a short break, sorry work took over my life for a week or so, here is a new rose for the day "S Elisabetta d'Ungheria" which would translate into English " S Elizabeth of Hungary". I think it ids the same rose that is listed here: https://www.helpmefind.com/gardening/l.php?l=2.38425.3&tab=1
-
I still have many posts to make re Roses in Rome Rose Garden and the new annual rose competition is already upon us. The main competition was held 18th May.
Here is the next rose still remaining from my original visit in October last year. Salut à Luxembourg. https://www.helpmefind.com/gardening/l.php?l=2.79211.1&tab=1
-
I am so glad to see the daily roses are back, a bright start to the day
-
Thanks Hilary. :) Here is another before I disappear for a couple of days. Have to go to The UK.
This rose is called 'Sara'. Doing a search on "Help me find" threw up several possibilities but the label in the Rose Garden referred to 'Alberici' so I am presuming it is this rose https://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=2.38967.1&tab=1
-
'Satin Haze' for today with some basic information here https://www.helpmefind.com/gardening/l.php?l=2.63470&tab=1
-
'Schone vom See' which presumably was in one of its more faded colours in Rome. Some more photos here showing the full range of colour variation https://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=2.67230.0&tab=1
-
I like both roses. Thank you David.

'Silver Ghost' is more my kind of rose. Natural looking. All the roses I have in my small garden were already there or I have taken cuttings from clippings thrown out by others. In the latter case I have not known what flower type they were until a year or two later.

PS I wanted to use the word "prunings" instead of clippings but it seems I am trying to reinvent the English laguage. (Wouldn't be the first time!). For me "clippings" and "trimmings" refer to the tips of twigs whereas "prunings" are thicker and more suitable for using as cutting material. "Pruning" seems to exist only as a concept noun. Is it only me, or the folk around Leeds, who refer to "prunings" in the sense I intend, that is as a countable noun?

As you will understand from my previous posting in this thread 'Simply the Best' isn't the most aptly named rose for my tastes. https://www.helpmefind.com/gardening/l.php?l=2.34966&tab=1 It seems to be a lot darker when the flowers are fresh than in my photo.

Appropriately named 'Summer Joy' for today. It appears there are two roses that go under this name. One similar to that I photographed in Rome Rose Garden here https://www.fond-ecran-image.com/galerie-membre,fleur-rose,rose-summer-joy-coloma-17e31-fei-3643jpg.php and a second, double pink one, here https://www.helpmefind.com/gardening/l.php?l=2.6010&tab=1
-
Oh dear! 'Summer Joy' is immediately followed by 'Summer Memories'. I would have sworn that summer had only just started. Having said that, it is an undeniable fact that the days are now getting shorter again. There is more information and more photos about 'Summer Memories' here https://www.helpmefind.com/gardening/l.php?l=2.44786

There have been several roses named 'Sylvia' through the ages but more about this one can be found here https://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=2.16733.2

https://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=2.38898 gives some information about today's rose which is 'Tequila'

I love the colour

Welcome back David. Yes, the colour is lovely Hilary. I am broadening my horizons colour wise.

The label in the Rose Garden, Rome for this rose reads "'Ursula' Germania". There are one or two possible candidates here https://www.helpmefind.com/rose/plants.php?searchNmTyp=5&searchNm=ursula&rid=4072&sbSearch=SEARCH&tab=1
-
There are 4 entries for 'Vendee Globe' here https://www.helpmefind.com/rose/plants.php?searchNmTyp=5&searchNm=vendee+globe&rid=4072&sbSearch=SEARCH&tab=1

The rose for today, one of the last as I am coming to the end of the alphabet, is 'Victor Hugo'. More here https://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=2.5682.2&tab=1
-
The photographs here (apart from the one of a chrysanthemum of the same name) https://www.helpmefind.com/gardening/l.php?l=2.42884.1&tab=1 do more justice to this rose than mine. 'Ville de Caen'.

"Virgo for today. https://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=2.6445
This will be the last posting of a named rose as I have now come to the end of those I photographed last October. There are over a thousand roses in the Rome Rose Garden but it is closed over the summer so there won't be any opportunity to get more photos until the autumn.
I remember saying at the beginning of this thread that I didn't know how much summer watering the roses got. I passed by (outside) a few days ago and it would seem that the area gets a regular watering judging by the condition of the lawns around the flower beds.
-
Thanks very much for this great series, David! (And we all look forward to some new discoveries from you, when you get round to the Rose Garden again in the autumn....)
-
Thank you David for all the lovely roses. Some had such amazing colour that almost tempted me to go and order them. I held fast but I am looking forward to some more in the autumn. Perhaps you could photograph some Salvias that do well in your area?
-
Thanks for the compliments and I am glad that you liked some of the roses. Many of the photos I took no doubt did not do the roses full justice. In my last posting I wrote "This will be the last posting of a named rose" (my emphasis here) because there is one photo of such a beautiful rose which, however, I do not have the name for. I left the possibility of sending it open even though a photograph of an un-named rose is of little use to anybody. But it is beautiful to look at all the same, so here it is. This really will be the last - at least for a while.
