Harbinger of autumn....
« on: September 20, 2013, 10:41:31 AM »
Today I discovered Narcissus broussonetii appearing for the first time since I planted it some 18 months ago.  Oron Peri suggested this species for our climate and soil.  Is so lovely with a wonderful perfume...  very exciting to see it!

Pamela,
I love the look of that narcissus!
Here in our garden we are suffering through a hot "Mediterranean" summer with temperatures into the 40s (oC) but this is a bulb I consider to be a sign of the autumn, Urginea maritima,
cheers

Our Sea Sqills are flowering too; 4 metre high spires along our driveway. The leaf rosettes are a terrific foliage asset too. We must have had a shower or two while I was away in Thailand for this year is the first time they have not collapsed before reaching full height and flowering. I see Scilla peruviana is moving too and there's a few colchicums in bloom too.

Other autumn bulbs are in bloom now, including colchicums.
This is one I got as "Lilac Major" which might be the variety known as 'LilacWonder'

I've got my first proper crocus too. Just a few days back. I took photo's but still cannot work out the How-To of reducing pic sizes tho I have a new programme with which to do so, IF I can master it. It's called 'Irfanview'. Apparently it's easy. There are nerines on the move too and my mo-in-law's Lycoris aurea is fabulous.

One of the few native Australian bulbs is the autumn flowering Calostemma purpureum,

Nerines are starting in our garden.
The red Nerine fothergilla "Major" is now considered a form of N. sarniensis;
The magenta-pink Nerine rosea is delicate but tough,

At last I've learned how to down-size lo-res images so here are a few hybrid nerines from our garden.
