CHUFA NUT (TIGER NUT) :
CYPERUS ESCULENTUS VAR. SATIVUS
By Betty Molesworth Allen
I remember chewing these nuts as a child in the north east of England but have never seen them since.
Although we have been to Spain several times we have never come across the drink made with these nuts or seen the nuts in the shops. However, I do have the recipe on how to make the drink.
The illustration is by the writer of the article

THE EMPEROR’S NEW CLOTHES
by Piero Caneti
In this article the use of plants, which bought in the spring
, to create an instant flower filled garden, are dead by the end of the winter
, is discussed.
I have often bought this type of plant, hoping to overwinter it, without much success.
A list a few of these plants and some photos
Chrysanthemum, Cyclamen, Gardenia, Geranium and Poinsettia.
Another topic is ‘The most widely used compost for the cultivation of plants’
Twenty years on the use of peat for horticultural use is now frowned upon.

SPRING REFLECTIONS
by John Joynes
The author sits under a tree enjoying the sights and sounds of his garden. The article is illustrated by a drawing by Derek Toms of a swallow feeding its young.
I have been waiting for March 1st to post this as I have a Greek stamp celebrating the arrival of the swallows in March and a Willow Pattern plate also depicting swallows.

JOURNAL 20, April 2000
In the list of contributors there are the names of two people who wrote book reviews.
Sally Williams who wrote about
Australia's Open Garden Scheme Guidebook
And
Flavio Caneti who wrote about two books
Giardini d’ Oggi in Toscana
And
Velletri, le sue Camelie
And the last but not least unsung hero of Journal number 20 , thanks to Barbara Terzopoulos for her help in proof- reading.
To brighten this piece a bit I am attaching scans of a few Australian postage stamps and photos of Camellias taken in Spain
