Title: Orchids
Post by: Umbrian on May 01, 2014, 05:27:38 PM
I saw a small colony of these white orchids today can anyone identify them please? (Two reasons for this post, do not have my wild flower books with me and am still struggling with posting from my iPad - if this succeeds it will be my umpteenth try after one success!)

You succeeded this time.
It looks like it could be Orchis provincialis, but it is difficult to see the details in your photo. This and O. pauciflora are very similar, but the flowers of the first one are whiter, the tip of the spur is more swollen than on O. pauciflora (difficult to see here), and the leaves of O. provincialis are spotted , they are not visible here either.

Well, I succeeded in one way Jorun but realised I had lost all definition so must persevere to get things right . Thanks for info re orchids  - many varieties are prolific this year that is wonderful to see but I have little time for botanising at the moment and so am trying to photograph as many as possible  :)

Have just looked at original 'photo that was good (for me) and can say that they were definitely Orchis provincialis as the leaves are spotted  - should have done this before last post I now realise but nice to have identification so many thanks again.
