This beauty photographed by a friend in Greece in April. I have a horrible feeling that once it is identified, I will say "of course, why didn't I think of that?"

I am establishing a garden on Waiheke Island, 35 minutes out of Auckland. The site is windy, the clay soil dries out quickly in summer and is like plasticine in winter, but it is still very rewarding. Water is an issue, as we depend on tanks. I'm looking forward to sharing ideas. Caroline

At first glance I would have said some
Arbutus
cultivar, though it doesn't flower in April, nor are those felty leaves of an
Arbutus
. I'm sure I'll feel silly too when someone identifies this!

Looks a bit like a Manzanita, they can bloom in early spring.
I couldn't say for sure though.

I think JayB may be quite right:
Arctostaphylos uva-ursi
?....no, I think I got it - this must definitely be:
Arctostaphylos pringlei

Was it photographed in the wild or in a garden?

Thanks everyone. I think the mystery is now solved, as it turns out the photo was taken in California on the slopes of Mt Palomar, not Greece. which meanss
Arctostaphlos pringlei
, as identified by JayB and Hinterland1, is totally on the button.
