Most definitely alive, but an example of summer dormancy. Every year this shrub shuts down for the summer, loses its leaves and to all intents and purposes looks like a bundle of dead twigs. However, as soon as there is any significant rain in the autumn/winter it comes back to life with a burst of fresh green growth and masses of small yellow flowers, followed by the distinctive curled, ram's horn seed pods.
Cyprus Branch Head. Gardens in a field 40 m above sea level with reasonably fertile clay soil.
