What is this 74? NOW SOLVED

Umbrian asked for something more interesting. I'm not sure if this will fit the bill, I guess we'll find out from responses.
Is it Animal, Vegetable or Mineral? Or maybe even Alien!

It' s a scale from a pine cone.

I have gardened in sub-tropical Florida, maritime UK, continental Europe and the Mediterranean basin, France. Of the 4 I have found that the most difficult climate for gardening is the latter.

It seems to be a cross between a fish and a pear.

is a new one on me but having looked it up I see what you mean.
I know the photo doesn't have anything to compare size to, Miriam, but
