White Narcissus ID'd by Fermi as Narcissus papyraceus
« on: August 06, 2013, 12:44:28 PM »
I have this lovely Narcisscus which I think is N. tazetta but I am not sure. Also I would like to know the cultivar.  ( I did ask this before but didnt get a response).  I am hoping to plant more this autumn but cannot find it anywhere.  It has a white cup which appears to be unusual. Hope someone can help.
Thanks

Hello Fermi
The problem is that all the tazetta I have found on the web (including 'Paperwhite' ) have a yellow corona.  I have not seen a Paperwhite with a white corona.  It flowers in February here which is very early spring.

I'd agree with Fermi, Pamela: that it's Narcissus papyraceus ("Paper-white"). This does have a white corona - any "Paper-white" daffodils being sold with yellow coronas are mis-named and probably N. tazetta!
There don't seem to be many firms selling it yet this season though. You could try Sycamore Trading, though I've never used them.

If I may comment after Our Glorious Leader has spoken I agree with Fermi and Alisdair that it is 'Paperwhite'. I also grow Narc. pachybolbus which also has all-white tazetta type bunch-flowers. It is said to be attractive because the dormant bulbs have wonderful glossy dark brown tunics! They do but I don't dig them up every year to admire them. The flowers are somewhat more starry in appearance than 'Paperwhite'. There is another one too which has very starry all-white flowers but I cannot recall it's proper name right now. Maybe Fermi will know it? They are all great bulbs for Med gardens.

This supplier seems to be selling it as a Tazetta, saying it's synonymous with 'papyraceus'

Jills,

In fact it is wrongly named on the bulbargence website.

It is definitely Narcissus papyraceus as Fermi suggested earlier.

Trevor, the pure white tazetta with more pointed petals than pachybolbus that you're thinking of is probably Narcissus dubius.

:) Thanks Alisdair. I did wonder if it could be N. pannizianus a species I am not familiar with.
