Crinum seeds (Crinum moorei?)
« on: September 28, 2015, 11:12:04 AM »
Saw this Crinum growing in the shade of trees in  a park in Sicily. Not knowing anything about Crinum, I took some seeds but wasn't very hopeful as they were still very green. I put them out in the sun to "ripen up a bit". Imagine my surprise to find that, despite still being green, they had sprouted roots. I now know (after a little research) that Crinum seeds do not keep and need to be sown fresh.

The site I consulted over the name said the seeds were "peanut sized". These range from walnut to horse chestnut size so perhaps it's not moorei after all?
I have a small garden in Rome, Italy. Some open soil, some concrete, some paved. Temperatures in winter occasionally down to 0°C. Summer temperatures up to 40°C in the shade. There are never watering restrictions but, of course, there is little natural water for much of June, July and August.
