The wheel seems to have come round again, John, with the Kew/Missouri plant list which we use on the forum as our authority now having it as Himantoglossum, recording Barlia as a synonym.
This change marks a change of mind by Rafael Govaerts, compiler of this particular taxonomic record. In 1996, in the World Checklist of Seed Plants, he had it as Barlia. But by 2003, in the World Checklist of Monocotyledons, he'd switched to Himantoglossum.
As usual, not all taxonomists agree with him. But the weight of opinion does seem to be on the side of Himantoglossum, with just one major publication sticking to Barlia since the Kew change to Himantoglossum (Flora Iberica vol 21 in 2005), but two more recent publications coming down in favour of Himantoglossum (R M Bateman: Evolutionary classification of European orchids: the crucial importance of maximising explicit evidence and minimising authoritarian speculation. Journal Europäischer Orchideen 41: 243-318, 2009; and Dobignard and Chatelain: Index synonymique de la flore d'Afrique du nord 1: 1-455. Éditions des conservatoire et jardin botaniques, Geneva, 2010).
Under any name it is indeed a striking plant; and yours looks a particularly handsome one, with much better colouring than one often sees.
Incidentally we saw a salep stall in central Athens this January - the first time we'd seen it in Greece.
