This plant was growing round the base of an electricity pole.
Now looking at it better it seems to me that it could be grown from cuttings
Does anyone know what it is?

Hilary,
It is
Commelina erecta
, an invasive plant,
flowers open in the early morning for few hours.
Very easy to grow from cuttings or seeds but beware, it can easily become a terrible weed, difficult to control it in the garden.

Isn't it odd how these plants get around? South Americans I think? They used to be sold in supermarkets here and they were everywhere but seem to have faded from favour nowadays.

Oron,
Many thanks for the identification.
Since it is so invasive I will not take cuttings to give to my friends who have gardens.
Instead i will visit it whenever I am in Sparta
