Has anyone grown this shrub, a native of Chile and Argentina? It looks tough but is it garden-worthy?

I haven't grown this personally, but it grows quite well up at the nearby UC Berkeley Botanic Garden under quite hot and dry conditions. I'd say it is rather more interesting than showy as a landscape shrub, and forms a rather thicketing sparse shrub which runs at the roots. I have photos of this shrub on my Flickr account if you google my name with the plant name, and you can judge for yourself whether it looks garden worthy.

Nice photos, David.
Interesting and able to cope with hot dry conditions would be quite satisfactory.
One seed has germinated and the seedling looks strong.
