I must confess it is not typical Mediterranean, but it is described in Polunin's Flowers of Greece and the Balkans as: Widespread on mainland and larger islands.

The yellow (found in the bark & flowers) is reminiscent of something like Berberis or Mahonia....Something from that family ?  ???

I don't think this is commonly thougt of as being something you would like to eat, but I had to check that. I found one reference which said: 'The Plants for a Future Database (www.pfaf.org), which holds ethnobotanical information on over 7000 plant species, says that xxxx have been eaten raw or cooked and are rich in protein.

Congratulations, Jo! Yes, its is a catkin from the common or European alder (Alnus glutinosa). It is not that common in the Mediterranean, but it does occur.
