Here's another, quite a surprise (and hardly mediterranean). Probably misleading clue, this trunk is nearly a metre in circumference.

Metasequoia glyptostroboides?
-
No, Jorun!
-
Swamp Cypress ?
-
Another almost look-alike - but no!
-
eucalyptus ?
-
Yew?
-
Looking at the surroundings the pic was taken in a "tropical " environment. Singapore? However that does not help identify it.
-
Arbutus ?
-
Not eucalyptus, not yew, not arbutus, and not Singapore. Actually growing in and native to temperate areas.
-
Podocarpus totara
-
Melaleuca?
-
Acer?
-
Dacrydium cupressinum
-
Fuchsia excorticata ?
-
Well done, Annie! The amazing Tree Fuchsia, Fuchsia excorticata, which we saw in New Zealand, particularly in the forests on the slopes of Mount Taranaki (Mount Egmont), North Island.

Lovely picture of New Zealand Bush Alistair. Very typical . I am really surprised to hear of a tree fuschia with trunk of 1 metre.....
-
No wonder I couldn't guess this one, I have never heard of such a fuchsia.
-
Nice one Alisdair, I've never spent so much time googling

We saw Fuchsia excorticata in NZ, South Island, in the damp forests of Fiorland National Park, on the slopes of Key Summit.
Flowers can grow directly on the trunk, as shown on the picture.
