BALKAN BOTANICAL GARDEN OF KROUSSIA
ΒΑΛΚΑΝΙΚΟΣ ΒΟΤΑΝΙΚΟΣ ΚΗΠΟΣ ΚΡΟΥΣΣΙΩΝ,ΒΒΚΚ
We visited this Botanic Garden at the beginning of June on what felt like a very hot day. I don't know if my photos do the plants or the garden justice. The garden is divided into about twenty different categories and I surely missed some of them.
I will start with the Arboretum which is situated in the natural oak forest .and jump to a different category each day to avoid boredom. Sometimes I have the names of the plant and other times not
A photo of the notice board and two photos from the arboretum

In the forest area of the garden there is an area devoted to plants which live on high mountains
Here are some photos of the area and Sedum ochroleucum, European stonecrop.
I like that the notice writes where the plant was collected, Pieria, the home of Mount Olympus

Below the Visitors Centre there are grassy walks between long roped off strips where it seems plant life does as it will or can
The photos are of a general view of the garden down towards the forest.

The Orchard
I was so busy looking for flowers to snap I didn’t take much notice of the orchard. You can see some of it in this photo
I suspect the trees might be almond trees in which case they would be spectacular in the spring.

Plants threatened with extinction
In one area of the garden there was this notice and what looked like new plant labels with the Latin name of the plant and where it originated
Helichrysum amorginum
Classified as EN endangered
This plant is only found in the wild on the island of Amorgos and one or two islands near by
Please note. I quote
“The Balkan Botanic Garden of Kroussia is authorized by the Ministry of Rural Development and Food for the collection of native species from all over the country.
These specimens are then transferred and propagated at the Institute of Plant Genetic Resources of the Hellenic Agricultural Organization.
The propagated material results from research into the biological cycle of each plant and is finally established in the planting areas of the Garden”

The garden seems to have gone through at least three phases of labelling. I found a couple of the labels stating
ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΟ ΕΝΔΗΜΙΚΟ , GREEK ENDEMIC
Lomelosia minoana subsp.minoana
The label states that this plant originated in the Regional Unit of Heraklion, Crete
Elsewhere I read that it grows between 450 m and 1500m

I don't know the name of these trees and if they are considered part of the orchard, they must look lovely when they are in blossom in the spring.
They probably are Prunus cerasus, Sour cherry

Unfortunately, this garden needs a good injection of funding, hopefully this will happen when things get back to ‘normal’

Hi everybody. I apologise for my absence from this Forum. I really missed all the great photos and information. Thank you Hilary for all your posting. They are much appreciated. What an interesting garden. Hopefully we will resume travelling and visiting gardens soon. The Paliurus spina grows well in Cyprus. As children we used to eat the green unripe fruit because it was crunchy.

ΒΑΛΚΑΝΙΚΟΣ ΒΟΤΑΝΙΚΟΣ ΚΗΠΟΣ ΚΡΟΥΣΣΙΩΝ
When we visited this garden, at the beginning of June, a collection of plants growing in small rock gardens, on what was once the car park, was pointed out to us
The notice board informed us that
The project is co-funded by the EU and national funds of the countries participating in the
Interreg IPA Cross Border Co-operation Programme
“Greece – Republic of North Macedonia
2014-2020”
The notice board also informed us that the project was for
“Protection of plants with conservation priority in the cross-border area “
“Phytodiversity awareness”
The plants are divided into three categories
A NEAR THREATENED
B ENDEMICS NOT YET THREATENED
C RARE – UNCOMMEN
I managed to take photos of fifteen or sixteen plants which were in flower at that time
