A friend of mine found this plant growing on top of a pile of pine needles!
Does anyone know its name?

I have gardened in sub-tropical Florida, maritime UK, continental Europe and the Mediterranean basin, France. Of the 4 I have found that the most difficult climate for gardening is the latter.

It is either overfed or definitely NOT
Sedum acre
if that is its natural size and habit.

(not a European native, incidentally; comes from Mexico but does crop up around the Mediterranean as an escapee)

Oron , S. Rubrotinctum has very red/pink ends to the leaves...at least the specimen I have here? It is a classic.

David,
It changes its color to red during summer or under sunny, dry conditions, usually turning green again in winter, or when growing in shady conditions.

David, Trevor, Alisdair and Oron,
Many thanks for all the interest in identifying my friend's mystery Sedum.
If it turns red and I see it I will take another photo

David,
I have the impression that it is S. album and not S. acre?

The general thought is that sedums turn red in the summer under drought conditions. However from my experience they turn red the year round presumably because they are under "drought" conditions in the winter as well as summer.
Oron, you may well be correct ....why not prepare a Flora for sedums!??
